What do I do when my puppy (4 1/2 months) gets matted?
Hey there everyone, unfortunately, Coco Chanel, my 4 1/2 month old Yorkshire Terrier has a problem.
As of this week we have noticed intense matting all over her fur, and need some serious advice on what I should do.
She has had a serious hate for grooming from brushes, dematting rakes, and hair clippers. My past Yorkie never had this much issue or fear of the grooming aspect of us taking care of him.
We tried to take Coco into a groomer last month, but they turned her away and had us come get her because she was freaking out so bad.
So I'm asking for major help, have any of you had issues like this? And if so, what do recommend that we do from here?
Thankyou - Shyla & Coco

if it is really matted only a groomer willl have the ability to groom her. If you are being turned away from the groomer because of her behavior its because of two things
1) she isnt desentized to all the grooming tools that are used
2) mats are very very painful and if she is really matted she probably won't be very happy about it with even you trying to groom her.
Most shelters put dogs under anesthesia in order to shave the dog because it is very painful and pulls away their skin
once your dog is groomed brush her every single day. get her used to that brush.
Oakley has an intense fear of the brush and hated being brushed. It made the process painful and i started brushing her less and less because i hated it. Then we went to go get her groomed and she had a few mats in her ears and around her neck that cause her to have to be shaved down pretty much all the way. She was freezing and hated it and she looked like a litte kitty cat. She had to wear a jacket inside a heated home.

Do some research on training Coco to expect the brush. Matting is painful and the only way to prevent them from happening is regular brushing or shaving. You mention "intense matting" and if this is the case a shave would be the best way to get rid of these, brushing would be way too painful at this point. Shaving will be very stressful for her, so talk to your vet about meds to help her through this procedure.
Good luck to you.

I am a groomer myself and saddly we see this alot. Once you get you puppy you would be useing a soft to med. slicker brush and a comb to check for matting once you have brushed the coat out. You may need to bring your puppy to the groomer about once a month if for nothing more than a bath to get them use to it. Since she is already matted and the groomer is unable to groom her you may need to try a vet groomer they can use a mild sedation to help with her stresse levels. Once she is more use to the grooming try to start bringing her back to your groomer. Also if you stick with the same groomer who has been doing her haircuts that can cut down on stresse levels also, the build up a relationship and trust with them.
