What could i be? Or am i just this small because of malnutrition?
Hippo came to us from a bad home, his mom being a pit bull. The thing is, Hippo is 4 months old and will not grow! Could he be a mix of something small or is it just of malnutrition?

Right now, it just looks to me like he's simply emaciated still. The poor boy! Thank god for caring people to take these babies from such homes! I would take him home and adopt him myself if I was in the same area. Good on you for trying to help him get better! Anyway, about the breeds, he could be a mix of anything. Never know until you get a dna test done and those haven't appeared to have been very accurate in the past in some situations. He looks like a pitbull pup to me though. Keep getting better Hippo!

What did the others die from? I would certainly run at least a blood panel since he looks like puppies I have seen with immature kidney disease. The kidney's don't grow, and unfortunately, there is no cure. Finding out may save you and him a really painful few months. And... if everything checks out, you can relax a bit as well!

he looks like he is emaciated still. i agree with the last posted answer about the blood panel, just in case there is another underlying issue with him. I think he looks like a pit puppy. How many were in the litter and were they saved or did they die? If the others died he could have the same disease they had (if they had one). Do get him to a vet ASAP to get a blood panel done. Hope Hippo gets better. He is just so adorable. Looks like he'll be a great looking dog. Keep me posted on his condition and what you find out if you get the blood panel run.

He is sooo thin. How many feedings is he getting, how much is he eating, is his stool normal or watery.
There are so many diseases like parvo and parasites that can rob a dog of health. There is also a blood disease which is passed via saliva which occurs in fighting dogs. If Dad had fought and infected mom and she infected her pups that may be something to ask the Vet.
I would be feeding him 4 to 6 times a day and checking to make sure he poops solid.
Keep at it, he is so cute, I hope he makes it.

WEll I'd say a "special meat and rice diet" (per your page) could most definitely cause malnutrition. If you don't know what you are doing or how to balance things, then use kibble!
Also, we have a pup that comes to daycare where I work. She started at 6 mos old and was the size of the average 8 week old lab. She was a parvo survivor. She has just recently started to shoot up and grow. We believe her to be mountain cur.

His organs, liver, pancreas, kidneys, etc. may have been damaged due to the severe malnutrition. Some bood work would help pinpoint the cause. I know that dogs suffering from severe malnutrition must be fed in a special manner, and it can take months before their bodies function normally.

First things first, if he hasn't been taken to a vet and had blood tests done and the work, I'd do it ASAP. Malnourishment can cause a lot of health problems. Blood and bone alike. When Chance was young he was seriously malnourished and he suffered rickets because of it.
Now onto the breed guess, I'd say that he's an American pit bull terrier. It is hard to tell though because of how small he is. If he isn't growing, he, too, could have some kind of bone deformity or deficiency that's stunting his growth. Looking at those pictures broke my heart. Thank dog for the people who rescued him.

I agree with Bam Bam--a meat and rice blend will not be a balanced diet. Fine for the short term, not so fine for the long term.
