What could be the cause of muscle spasms in my 10 yr old Aussie "Leo"?
The spasms happen maybe once a month, always in the rear/hips and the shaking is VERY hard [lots of uncontrolled movement].
When the spasm happens "Leo" is unable to move very much and becomes scared so I put my arms around him till the spasm stops. The spasms don't last very long but as mentioned above, they are very strong.

This has happened only once to my 10-year old chihuahua-pomeranian. It freaked me out, but I still don't know for sure what caused it. I found some information online that indicated muscle spasms can be caused by a calcium deficiency, so I increased the amount of bone in his diet (I feed raw), and it hasn't happened again (but that could be pure coincidence, as the information I found indicated that the only effective immediate treatment for a calcium-deficiency spasm was intravenous injection of a calcium supplement). I hadn't been giving him as much bone before, because he has only about six teeth, but he seems to be enjoying the extra chewing. You could consult your vet, and/or examine the calcium levels in the food he is getting.

This is something you should have your vet answer, because it could be a number of things.
It could be dehydration, or being an older dog it could be just about anything. Some animals get similar illnesses as humans do.
Again please have your vet sort this out for you. It;s possible it can be controlled with medication.
