What breeds of dogs have black tongues?

I know that Chow Chows and Shar Pei's have the blue/black tongue. I have some German Shepherd puppies that we rescued that have spots and such on their tongues and one family was afraid to adopt them because they thought they had to be mixed with Chows? I'd just like to know for clarification and further questions. Thanks so much.

I think that pretty much any breed can have a tongue with black spots. I have a purebred GSD and she has those.

I don't see what would be wrong if the puppies were indeed mixed with Chows though.=/

Dieta

chows
Only rarely you will see a very dark gsd with a black spot on tongue. Just a toss of the coin that they have the spot.
Blue tongues are very normal for the chow breed. I haven't seen any other breeds with blue tongue.

Chow-Chows and Shar-Peis are the two breeds that have SOLID blue/black tongues, but pretty much any breed can have black spotting on the tongue - it does not indicate they are mixed with Chow or Shar-Pei.

No, just because they have black spots doesn't mean they are Chows. Here is a good website about it www.columbusdogconnection.com you can show this to people who don't want to adopt a "Chow mix" and who probably won't believe you that black tongues don't always equal Chow.
GSDs, Rotties, Pits, Dobies and other "dangerous dogs" like Chows can have black tongues too.
But, even ones like Labs can have them. My dog is an obvious Labrador/Jack Russell mix and he has a black spotted tongue.
Good luck getting them adopted!

I had a Pomeranian with blue/black spots on his tongue, so I guess its pretty common.

I know for sure chow mixes are usually determined by a black mark on their tongues.

I have a chow with a blue/black dog and he is the sweetest dog i have ever had. The vets and the pet store cant believe how sweet he is. I dont know why people give chows a bad reputation. If u breed a dog to be vicious it will be. the neighbors kids run right up to him and they pet him and he just loves it.
