Small dogs don't grow out of it and should be fed at least 2 meals a day, but 3 or 4 would be better. If u try to feed them once a day they will likely get low blood sugar. If u think ur dog has low blood sugar put a little bit of karo syrup( that stuff you make pecan pies with, u can get it at the grocery store) on ur finger and put it in their mouth.

Toto, CD, RN, CGC

Most tiny dogs will never outgrow the dangers of low blood sugar. Usually you will learn to recognize the symptoms and be able to treat them when it first starts happening, but it is generally a lifelong problem.

I've never owned a dog under 40lb, so I'm not sure from experience.
The answers above sound about right though :) feed small meals throughout the day (be careful not to over feed, which would cause unhealthy weight gain). Consult with your vet to help you look for signs, talk with other small-breed owners who have the same problem, and do general research on blood sugar issues.

Best wishes!
