Wellness vs. Blue Buffalo for 18 lb shih-tzu?
I've read so many good reviews on Wellness and recently been seeing a lot on Blue Buffalo. Which is better for a small breed?
Wellness Small Breed- Adult Health
or
Blue Buffalo Small Breed Chicken and Brown Rice recipe
I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.
EDIT: I was trying to post the ingredients but it doesn't fit here. But the ingredients are found in their website:
Wellness-

Blue-

Thanks!

I've fed both Blue Buffalo and Wellness in the past and think they're both quality foods. Given the two options you mentioned, I'd probably go with Wellness because it seems less grain heavy.

I actually feed Wellness and I think it's a pretty good brand.
I'm not as familiar with Blue Buffalo but I get concerned when I see garlic as an ingredient. It IS very toxic fresh and cumulatively toxic when fed in trace quantities over a period of time.
Both these foods contain chicken and/or salmon meal. Meal is basically skin, meat and sometimes bones processed so that the water is removed. But not all places process the same way and that's where you have trouble.
I'd also check out Orijen. I'd feed this, but it gives Jack diarrhea because it's rich and he's got a very sensitive tummy. But I think it's literally the best out there.
What's nice about Orijen too is that the kibble pieces are quite small and because they are semi-flat disc shapes, so they would be great for a small breed like yours.
Sorry to throw in yet another option. If you choose Blue Buffalo, maybe try finding a formula without garlic.
Hope that helps!

Agreeing with CJ--out of the two, if money was no object, I'd be more likely to go with Wellness due to fewer grains.
Here's other answers I've given with my take on what to look for in a dog food based on much research and careful thought on my part:

Remember to think for yourself. Asking for opinions is part of research, but in the end you need to come to your own conclusions.
As for garlic, I'm not objective to it in small amounts. It's been used for centuries for various things and I use it for flea control. (I don't want to use pesticides like Advantage.)
This is, of course, just my opinion.

My Blue Buffalo does not have chicken nor chicken flavoring, as I use other mixes since I am trying to avoid too much chicken. It does have garlic, but I feel small amounts are not a major problem and are in almost all major brand pet foods.
That said, I use both Blue Buffalo and Wellness Core in my rotations. While I am not familiar with the types you suggested, I am overall happy with the companies and their overall ingredients.

I have no specific preference. Although I'm currently feeding Wellness and absolutely love it. He's doing great. We are feeding the core formula with no grain.

Grains in Wellness Super5 Chicken
1 Oatmeal (3rd ing), 2 Grnd Barley (4th Ing), 3 Grnd Brn Rice (5th ing), 4 Rye Flour (7th ing), 5 Rice Bran (10th ing), 6 Grnd Millet (19th ing)
Grains in BB Chicken & Brn Rice
1 Whole Grnd Brn Rice (3rd ing), 2 Whole Grnd Barley (4th ing), 3 Oatmeal (5th ing), 4 Rye (7th ing).
Carbs in Wellness 100%-22% protein-12% fat -11% moisture = 55% carbohydrate
Carbs in BB 100% - 24% protein - 14% fat - 10% moisture = 52% carbohydrate
Please show me how Blue Buffalo is more grain heavy than Wellness??? You depend too much on what dogfoodanalysis says. They knock some foods for tomato pomace and don't say a thing about it in foods that they give six stars. They can't count and apparently they can't read. They knock one food (BB Chicken & Rice for Lg Breed Adults) for containing black malted molasses and it doesn't even have it. Its black malted barley. I could go on but it makes me too angry. Do some research and thinking for yourselves!!!

Between Wellness Super5Mix Small Breed and Blue Buffalo Small Breed, I prefer Wellness. It has more protein and is less grain heavy.
In general, though, I like Blue Buffalo better. Garlic has been used as a natural flea repellent for years, and dogs have lived their entire lives on foods with garlic and suffered no ill effects.
Have you considered rotating between the two? You can find more information on rotation at :

My dog will not eat the black vitamine bits in the blue buffalo so I switched to Wellness. Wellness seem to have better ingredients. I found that customer service for Wellness was excellent. I just called them to ask some questions about their product and they offered to send me free samples. I said "sure". I received in the mail. dog food sample, dog treat samples and bunch of coupons.( and little goodies like pet passport-(not real passport), stickers, disposible poop pick-up thing.) Wellness is a few dollars more than Blue Buffalo but I think it is worth it cuz I know she'll eat it all and nothing goes to waste.

Between Blue Buffalo and Wellness, the base kibble are both super high quality. However, Blue includes the Lifesource bits (I admit, it just sounded like fancy merchandising when I first investigated Blue). They are great because they are cold-formed, which is cutting edge technology for pet food. It's about time pet foods started cold forming, human companies have been doing it for years to preserve the integrity of their product.
Anyway, the Lifesource Bits contain vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants in similar levels to Wellness and other super-premium foods, however, cold forming the antioxidants and vitamins and chelating them with specific minerals increases their effectiveness by up to 70%. I also like that it has Glucosamine in it, I like to support joint health prior to having joint problems (per recommendation from my veterinarian.) It also is all made in USA with US ingredients (besides New Zealand Lamb).
Check out dogfoodscoop.com for more info. Hope I helped!

I feed my boxers Blue Buffalo and they LOVE it. But I am thinking of trying Wellness CORE the ocean formula. My one boxer she has hip dysplasia and I've heard salmon is Really Good for pets with hip issues. I will say Blue Buffalo is a Really Good food and I would suject it to anyone. I even spoke with a salesman at Petsmart and he said that Blue Buffalo is a step down to Wellness it's that Wellness is a little more expensive than Blue Buffalo is.

Blue Buffalo vs Wellness?
Both are good but I use Blue!
It has less grains than Wellness (The other people who posted didn't do their research:D)
Check out their Blue Wilderness foods. They have NO GRAINS! Amazing! Blue's other foods also have a little less grains than wellness too!
This food is cheaper too. Why would I spend more on Wellness if Blue Buffalo is just as good (better in my opinion!)
