Trying to stop are 9 year german shepard from opening our food closet when we are not home?

Our 9 year old german shepard is some how opening our food closet and taking all the food out and paper goods. We have moved his food to another place that he cannot get to. We have moved all the food to the top shelve as well. He has been doing this for about 2 weeks. He always does it when we are not home. We also have a puppy chiwawa, she has been with us for 3 months, they play when the shepard wants to. We have tied a rope around the handles of the door so they will not open, but he has figured out how to still get in. We have also bought him a kong and filled it with things hoping this will work. If any body has any suggestions please let me know, thanks

yeah... Good Luck! Lola opens cabinets and doors too. Putting up baby gates on both entrances to the kitchen helped with Lola, but my partners old GSD... he just rammed right through them... no keeping him away!
I know at Home Improvement stores, they have these plastic covers that go over door knobs, that make it nearly impossible to open without thumbs. Maybe try that. and... always... exercise him before you leave:o)

my dogs are GSD too, (I have 3 )and a 3 year old child, and I use the same thing for both, I take a nice dog collar and fasten it as tight as i can around the doorknobs,to where you have to pull and unfasten the latch at the same time to remove it ,and it looks better then a rope

Dieta

They sell plastic child lock slides in the stores, check wal mart or toys r us. babies r us.
The dog may start to dig at the doors later so be prepared to correct that too.
Yeh the kong will help.
There is some doggie games online at caninetrainingsystems.com also. They are wood and the dog can nose the board to get the treats.

Burkett's Cookies 'n' Creme

You know those child locks you can buy to keep babies out of cabinets? You might try those.

this might be kinda expensive but i am not sure. but and set up cameras by the food closet and act like you are leaving. then, have the other end of the camera in the trunk of your car. watch him/her and every time he tries to open the closet, have an alarm that goes off. once he backs away, you can turn off the alarm. if he tries to go back then just keep setting off the alarm. he will get the message that every time he goes to open the closet, he will have the alarm on. after he walks away from the closet, you can go back in the house and praise him. i hope i helped. if you have any questions just email me. c_Freeman95@yahoo.com
