the Differences between a Bullmastiff, and a Boerboel? So I'm walking through the park with a friend when I see this
...adorable large monstrous looking canine approaching me.He comes up with no owner in sight and puts his two paws up on me and plants his forehead into my face/forehead=(and i go down like a sac of potatoes. Next his owner comes over and checks to see if i was okay and it was a good thing the guy was a doctor too! Phew! But anyway i thought it was a Bullmastiff but i was corrected and found that it was a Boerboel. I just wanted too know what are the differences in em? Is one superior to the other because i know they were both bred to guard and protect.I mean does one do a better job protecting the home and personal belongings or just me as the owner?I understand the BB isnt prone to as many health issues as its slightly shorter cousin the BM.Can someone please clarify? Is the BB the best Mastiff Breed? Are they easy to train?Im an active guy can i take this breed running with me?Which one's better in a sense cause they both look the bloody same to me!Oh yeah are BB's as smart as a GSD

they are south african mastiffs. All giant breeds have health warning, as well as many other breeds.
I suggest lots of reading about mastiffs.
Other dogs that are good for running are the standard poodle and the grey hound. I would go with a mature grey hound because they are a running dog and they have the large chest with large lungs. I would also go with the grey hound because there are tons of grey hounds that are in rescues, because if their times are not good enough for the race track, they generally are uthanized at the end of their short careers.
Save a grey hound :)

You STILL looking for answers about a guard dog. You don't need a dog to protect your home, what you need is an alarm system.
Deogie's presence and growly bark is enough to stop anyone in their tracks. His job is NOT to protect me, my job is protect him. Being only 95 pds, I have and would step in front of Deogie if I suspected he was in harms way.
Deogie would lose his mind if anyone tried to hurt me, which is good, but if someone broke into my home to steal my stuff, heck take it all as long as Deogie is safe and sound.

If you want an active dog that could also be a gaurd dog i'd go with something like a doberman. A mastiff would not be a very good runner lol they have the short snouts and heavy bodies, they're really not that active. they're laid back and waaay sweeter than most people would expect. My bullmastiff/American bulldog pup is pretty active from the american bulldog part of her being a high energy breed. And I agree with everyone else, top priority should be for a companion. Lots of dogs will protect there owner if bonded strong with you. =) go to the shelter if you're interested in bully breeds because they have mastiffs, pitbulls, american bulldogs EVERYWHERE....in the one I volunteer at anyway but i'm sure that's how it is in alot of places. Shelter dogs are great. And be prepared for lots and lots of time spent training. My pup Nova likes to test me alot lol

Historically, yes mastiffs were guard dogs. Due to the size of a mastiff & mastiff type breeds these dogs need consistency in training. I hope the dog you encountered was a puppy b/c my dog would never be allowed to jump on a person. I used to own a bullmastiff who was very smart. Sailor, is an English Mastiff. Mastiffs need moderate exercise & are very costly to own. Mastiffs are intimidating due to the size of them. But everyone that I have owned or met are very gentle. As the breed is powerful & can be stubborn firm training and socialization are a must. Please do some research on Mastiffs first, they are not for everyone.
