Skin Allergies and Dog Bedding?

My dog seems to be itching a lot lately. He gnaws and chews on himself several times a day, but I know he doesn't have fleas because I use a treatment on him (Advantix) and I check him regularly. I bring him to my friend's house a lot, and her yard is very sandy. He likes rolling around in the sand and is usually covered in it. Could this be making him itch? He also has a bedding of cedar chips in his dog house, and I'm wondering if that is what's making him itch too. Does anyone have any recommendations for dog bedding that won't get ripped up and strewn all over the yard (we tried blankets and pillows...)?

The first thing that I’d be looking at is what you are feeding him. Often times, lower quality dog foods contain ingredients such as corn and things that many dogs have allergies to. I’d suggest feeding a food such as Innova, Solid Gold, etc.

When it comes to dog beds, really if you have a destructive dog, anything is going to get chewed up. A dog who likes to chew things is going to find a way to do that with really anything. We have a Doberman who is similar when it comes to ripping out bedding, and chewing up towels, etc. We just don’t allow those things to be around him when he is unsupervised to prevent this from happening. And when we are around, if he does try to pick up the bed or towels, a firm ‘no’ stops him. By keeping those things around him when you can’t discipline him, you are inadvertently telling him it’s okay to do what he’s doing.

I’d check his food first, and if you are already feeding a high quality diet and you have eliminated the things that you think he’d be allergic to, an allergy test may be the next step. Best of luck.

It could be many things. My friend just told me that there is a blood tests that is used to test for all allergies.
Also it is possible about the sand. We have alot of it and the one smooth coat itches alot after rolling in it. Try the big paddle brush some dogstores sell them now, mainly used on horses. The long soft bristles loosen the sand.
And remember flea bites just one can send a dog into a dermitutus itching spree.
Good shampoos are solid gold, and pet promise.
Bedding- I know cedar chips a dog won't chew them in most cases.
