Rescued dog who was beaten for 2 years before we adopted him
My recued shepard mix, 7 year old male, we've had for 5 years wants to stay outside all the time, even when it's raining or snowing. We want him to be part of the family. He's on doggie Prozac to help with his nervousness. It isn't working. I drag him in, but he constantly barks to go out. He has always been afraid to go through an open door. He has a dog house that he doesn't use-he's afraid to go in. I don't know what to do? Please help...

some dogs just have a fear of being enclosed. sounds strange but I have had one before.
He was a malmute. He would even get sick in the winter, but they have the coat and desire to do that.
You can try food to tempt him in and train him with food to feel more comfortable going through doorways. I am againist meds for dogs. There has to be a way to help him overcome fear. I would recommend someone come to your house to see if they can figure out what is wrong. If he was truely beaten he could have been hit in the head too hard and there is some brain damage??not sure.. He might just be a dog that is happier outside then in.

Rather than spend the money on drugs for him, I'd invest in a few sessions with a behaviorist. A professional behaviorist can work wonders when it comes to problems like what you're experiencing. But I want to be clear....it's NOT because the behaviorist will come in and magically transform your dog's behavior. That's not how it works and anyone who tells you it is? Run, don't walk, to another behaviorist.
Basically, what needs to happen is that you need to figure out exactly what makes him tick. The behaviorist is there to translate his behavior for you. We often think dogs do things for certain reasons, but I can guarantee you that this would be worth the investment. 99% of the time, we have our eyes opened to things we never noticed or connected. And learning how to communicate and understand him is the goal. The prozac type drugs will only mask the problem they will NEVER help him the way you want him to be helped.
He CAN make progress, but you need professional assistance.

what vet puts a dog on prozac??!! how about this there is two ways to do this. By food as someone has said it will take time not days but weeks or months you need to just get him to go through by himself not pulled he has to come to you"YOU DON'T GO TO HIM". he has to go little by little. or you can tighten up the collar and walk him through make sure the collar is tight enough he can slip it and you just walk in and out of the door but I think the first thing I said would be best I am no dog whisperer and if you don't know what you are doing well I think you can hurt the dog. Food usually is good to use but it takes a long time sometimes. nothing is never done in a day.
Good luck
