Newfie w/Severe Allergies?

Friends of mine went down to Florida to visit THEIR friends. Their friends own a Newfie who became scabbed over everywhere and flaky skinned. I think they are snowbirds, 'cause they have a house in Maine too. Anyway, this Newf is on a natural food, but I don't know which. I was thinking it was food allergy, but I've never heard of such a severe reaction!

Because I have never seen these people or their dog, I don't know whether or not the vet has seen the dog. I do not know if the dog has had this long.

Could it be parasites? A food allergy? Any ideas appreciated. Thanks you guys!

Oh, and if it makes a difference, the dog has NOT been shaved.

sounds like a mite infection, Mange.
But, the vet should be seeing a vet if it is that bad.

It could be any of the above or a dozen other things. they need to get it to a vet and identify the correct problem.

Poor doggie. It could be food allergy, but with such an acute and severe case, I'd be suspecting maybe a contact allergy or something the dog experienced for the first time.

If they recently changed foods, then there is a greater possibility that it is food allergy or intolerance related, but it could also be mange or a type of skin condition that isn't allergy related.

In any case, I'd recommend a vet visit. If it is allergy, it can be systemic and there might be a possibility the allergic reaction can be even more serious (especially if the dog were to keep being inadvertently exposed to whatever the allergen might be.) That can be not only uncomfortable for the dog, but potentially dangerous.

Some dogs get serious skin reactions from new laundry detergent that their bedding is washed in, so I mean, it could be ANYTHING. Only a vet can tell for sure and treat him.
