Need help housebreaking adult dog.
5 year old male mutt.
Been with us since he was 6 weeks old.
Doesn't go to the bathroom on the first floor or our bedroom on the second floor (where he sleeps at night).
But the basement and other rooms on the second floor seem fair game.
We keep the basement door closed and have a gate across the stairs.

Dogs only learn by experience. He learned that the rooms his family spend time in are NOT places he can toilet.
To break him of the habit of going in the basement or second floor you have to supervise him while spending time in that area. Using a leash is helpful if he starts sniffing, take him outside.
Pick one area at a time and don't rush.
Reward him everytime he toilets outside.
