My puppy gets REALLY hyper around other people, how can I stop this behavior?
When my Cairn Terrier puppy sees other people he gets really hyper and hard to handle, its almost embarassing because people want to pet him and they just give up. He settles down after a few minutes, but by then the person already has a bad opinion of him. How can I get him to stop this behavior?

Make sure that when someone comes over, they are ignoring your puppy. When someone pets the dog, or acknowledges the behavior, your puppy is going to think that this is what you must want! So he is going to always act excited because it gets him attention. When someone comes over, do you hold the puppy? Keep him on the ground, and tell your guest to ignore him. Don't look at him, don't say anything to him, and don't touch him. When the puppy realizes that no one is going to be paying attention to him when he is like this, he will settle on his own. The more you try to intervene and MAKE him try to calm down, the more he is going to fight it because he is unsure of what you want from him. You can tell him 'no' when he does get hyper around other people because you should be his leader, so it is okay for you to give him orders. The puppy can sniff your guest, but shouldn't get any attention from them until he is calm. Please message me if you have more questions - I am limited on word space here.

We had a Cairn terrier for 15 years. He did the same thing as a puppy. It got a bit better as he got older but, I'm afraid, by experience, Cairns are very independent. We found it impossible to get him to stop certain behaviors eg. barking his head off at hot air balloons and going crazy when anyone went in the pool. We now have a shihpoo and the difference is unbelievable...she's more well behaved as a puppy than our Cairn as a senior dog.
