Best type of food (for now) is whatever his previous owner was feeding him. His vomiting and diarrhea (I assume is what's going on here) are probably being influenced by the stress of a new home, and feeding a new food on top of that is asking for trouble. Many dogs have trouble switching foods and you have to do it gradually over several days.

If it's really been non-stop since you got him, you need to see a vet, though. A week should be long enough to transition a healthy dog, something may be wrong.
