My dog (welsh terrier) was treated for severe lyme disease in june.

She could not bend her front right leg and back right leg. I took her to the vet immediately and he prescribed 100mg doxycycline + anti-inflammatories. She bounced right back and has since shown no symptoms. Is there any preventative maintenance I could do, medicines I should be aware of to keep her lyme disease symptoms at bay?

thank you!

Bella was diagnosed with Lyme disease when she was a year old. She had a recurrence a year later. When I had asked the vet what I could do to prevent it from coming back they said there is a vaccination that is now available that may help prevent any new occurrences but not a reoccurance. There are also plenty of pet-safe sprays you can use outside to minimize the amount of ticks in your area. Also, check them for ticks often.

The biggest thing is to watch your dog closely. Since you know them best you will be able to pick up on the slightest changes in behavior. Things that we noticed in Bella were a decrease in appetite and the fact that she was becoming a bit lethargic (we knew if she did not jump up and run when we said the word walk that something must be wrong!). Luckily she was treated before she had joint pain and inflammation which can occur very quickly in infected dogs.

Here’s a good site to check out that has a lot more info: www.thepetcenter.com
