My dog stays in crate the entire day but the crate is open and he has the opportunity to come out.
Tater sleeps all night in his crate with the door closed. When I get up in the morning I let him out to eat and go to the bathroom and to play for a little while. When I leave to go to work he goes back into his crate (his own doing). I do not lock the crate door and leave it wide open so he can see it. He stays in there all day until I get home at 5. My boyfriend has been home (laid-off) and can attest that Tater stays in there the entire day. I feel bad for Tater, he has the opporunity to come out and walk around but he doesn't. Any tips to get him to come out of his crate?

Crates can be considered a safe place for a dog. He may just feel secure being in at and makes him totally relaxed. I wouldn't push him to not be in it because then when you want him to go he may not! You can use treats and positive commands when he is out of the crate hanging out with you. This will help him feel secure in other areas outside the crate. Look for signs to see if he is as relaxed outside the crate as inside.

I wouldn't push him either to not be in the crate because you don't want the problem of him not going into the crate when needed. The crate is his safe spot, where he feels comfortable. Like a dog house but inside. If you want your dog to be out of the crate during the day and in the crate at night move the crate. You would have to move it everyday. If you have a garage put it in the garage during the day & bring it back out at night. Give him a dog bed to use during the day.
