My dog is shaking and won't sleep.
My dog is shaking and won't sleep. This has been going on for four days. The only thing out of the ordinary was that we shaved half of him. He was shaking and seemed scared so we stopped and decided to finish the next day and he started acting funny. He is an elevenish year old cocker spaniel. We got him last year from a possibly abusive family and heard that they abandoned him in their old house. He is usually very energetic for his age and very happy to see my girlfriend and healthy. He just sits around with his head slumped nodding off and shivering slightly. Whenever his head actually touches the ground he snaps up and resumes nodding off. We have to encourage him to eat or give him people food which has never been a problem. He wouldn't drink water all day yesterday and then today drank half his bowl. He has gone out once a day to use the bathroom then pretended to but nothing came out. We cover him up and he will lay there or sleep for about three minutes and wake back up. I tied his neck down since he wouldn't let his head touch the ground and he slept but I felt bad because it looked uncomfortable. We thought he was cold so we covered him up but he still shivered.

Are you absolutely, positively certain he did not suffer some injury during the shaving process?? Shaking and not wanting to lie down usually indicates back pain, and usually pretty severe back pain at that.
Is it possible his neck was bent too much or maybe a leg lifted to high or even that he jumped off the grooming table?? I am a groomer so I know how easy it is for a dog to get injured while being groomed, particularly an older dog like he is.
At his age it is more than possible that he has some arthritis or bony spurs in his spine and the grooming somehow caused pain.
I would certainly rule that out via a good vet exam ASAP prior to anything else. It really sounds like he is in pretty severe pain.
