Rocko

My dog has suddenly decided to be possessive over the family. to where he hates my other dog, what to do?

His name is Nico, he is 6, 3/4 German Sheperd, not sure the other quarter. Other male is 3, name is Rocko, he is a Great Dane Lab Mix. Nico has decided he hates Rocko when they are both around people.
Both are neutered.
can't have them in the house at the same time now.

What's the deal and how do I fix it?

oh and Rocko wont play nice, as in snarling and biting, with other dogs now at the dog park, when he didn't used to. could that be because of at home??

You need to get a trainer to help you with this.

I can't tell you for sure what is going on with Nico. But I can tell you with 100% confidence it wasn't sudden. It may have seemed sudden to you, but the trouble is that we, as humans, are sometimes unable to recognize subtle cues in behavior that go on between two dogs in the same home. I'm certain this has been brewing for a while, and I'm also thinking it has nothing to do with protectiveness of the family.

I think it will only get worse if you don't get someone who knows about dogs and their very intricate communication with each other to come into the environment and watch the dogs interacting. Only then can that person give you a good idea of 1) what the issue really is and 2) the best plan of action for helping both dogs change the behavior.

If you try on your own, you run the very real risk of making things worse without meaning to by applying the wrong techniques for the situation. You need a professional.

Good luck!

my friends dog used the same thing the way she stopped it was she would put them in the same room and give both of them a treat and when ever they were together she would give them a treat so they would think it would be a good thing when the were together and when you go to the dog park you could do the same thing.

I think Nico is showing the other dog who is boss of the home. The more you allow it the more the dog will exercise his right.
Yes, it is carrying over to the dog park. I wouldn't take him there until you completely handle his behav. at home.
You can solve it but it won't be easy. You can take charge and start blocking him. Body blocking can be helpful but I don't know how far this has gone. Also, as back up dog needs a thyroid and diabetes check up to make sure he is not sick. Imbalances can make a dog aquire an irritated state, cause he is not feeling well. Walk him more also a bored dog can be a bored dog who likes to pick on the other dog because he has no good outlet to release his energy. Those two breed combos are high energy dogs who need a daily routine. set up a routine of walking after work. Fast paced walking is needed. Frisbee, balls, running is good too. :)
