My Bernese Mountain Dog has weak hind legs after coming back from being washed. WHat could be wrong with him?
I took my bernees mountain dog to be washed. When I droped him off he was happy and jumpy but then when I went to pick him up he was withdrawn and couldn't stand to pee. I took him for a quick stroll around the block before I got him in the car and he kept dragging his hind legs along the pavement. He kept trying to pee and kept falling over or into bushes. He is 8 years old and is very healthy. He had recently been for his yearly check up at the vet and nothing was wrong. The dog wash people said that they found a lump (about 2inches in diametre) near his scrotum but I and my dad (who is a doctor) could not find anything. What could be wrong with him?

An 8 year old Berner is pretty old and grooming one involves lots and lots of standing, something the average house pet is not used to doing.
If he is suffering from some arthritis it is most likely that all this increased standing has caused a major flare up, as it takes HOURS to wash, then dry the average Bernese.
I would observe for a few days and if it continues have your vet examine him, perhaps even do some xrays of his hips and spine to check for arthritis.
I would also talk with your vet about starting him on a glucosamine supplement if he isn't already taking one.

Hi,
I work at a dog grooming salon, so here is what I think..
I know how hard it is for these large breeds to stand up for that long when they are older. it is tough on their old joints, ESPECIALLY if they are even slightly over weight.. if he is over weight..that is the #1 problem. if not, than maybe try a different place next time..it's not so normal that he was withdrawn..ESPECIALLY is he was happy at the beginning...definetely something to worry about.
For the lump...I would bring him back and ask them to point out EXACTLY where it is. If it is at the base of the dog's penis, and the "lump" is on both sides of the penis..then DON't worry. This is normal in male dogs & comes and go. He could have it one minute and then 20 minutes later its gone which might be why you didn't find anything. this is NORMAL..but unfortunately...NOT something they teach you in grooming school...and is not common knowledge.
If his legs hurt in 3 days...i would recommedt a visit to the vet asap.

I agree with the other answers but another possibility is that the groomers drugged your dog. I have had this happen to me. They didn't tell me in advance and wouldn't release my dog. When arrived to pick him up I had to insist and found out why. He could hardly move. A trip to the vet proved I was right he eventually came out of it but it was a near thing.
