My 4 yr old male doxe goes crazy outside. Can not relax in his fenced in yard
Doxie age 4 mini male , sister 3 long haired reg.. They are house dogs when we are home. Last year at this time I fenced in my back yard for my dogs 25 x 40. They are only out there for 8 hours a day. Prior to that they were in a small coxy 8 x 10 kennel sunshade fabric on top and sides since we got each... Heat lamp winter fan in summer. Both dogs were fine. Now Gabe the boy does not want to stay more that a brief moment to potty and back. I have a wonderful covered patio with swing and chair. Even if I sit with him he goes crazy after we played fetch yesterday for an hour then he would not relax He made himself sick chasing each smell and sound. He has done this for a week of me sitting him to try to make him less stressed. The female just loves it outside. Should I put the small kennel cozy cave like home back to see if he is happy? Does he just have to much stimulation for his temperment? I am working with him daily for hours as school employee since I am out for summer.

I would definitely suggest a small dog house or kennel that he go into when he wants. He may just need his "space" and that will provide it. Many dogs like to have their own place...I think it is a great idea :)

Being left outside that long may have caused your doxie to become fearful of something and had no where to hide. Dogs want to be with their people and want security. Leaving them outside by themselves for 8 hours a day can cause boredom, fear, and other "emotions". Especially if they don't have shelter to go to if they want to sleep or hide.
Your doxie may have heard a sound that scared him and now associates the backyard with a bad feelings. He may get too hot or cold and that bothers him. A hawk or something may have scared him. It could be anything. But, he had no where to go and no one to comfort him because he was stuck outside.
You need to bring your dogs inside and slowly re-introduce the backyard to Gabe once again. You need to make it a positive experience.
With the sniffing he is doing, he may be checking everything out to make sure it is ok to be there. Since they cannot talk, we have to assume what they may be feeling.
