Hershey

My 3-yr-old cocker spaniel is fully housebroken at our house, but not when visiting friends and relatives.

He has embarrassed us in three different homes, two of which have never had animals living there. (So he isn't smelling another dog's "mark.") He doesn't act anxious or give any warning. Score so far: one poop, three pees.

The only thing I can think of is he is marking the territory as his, leaving his scent. If I couldn't trust my dog I would keep him on a leash when at someone elses house. If you notice him about to pee, firmly say no and take him outside. He needs to know, just like when you housebroke him that this behaviour will not be tolerated. Good luck

Is Hershey neutered? If not, it's quite normal for him to want to define unmarked territory! Or to redefine previously marked territory.

Your housebroken dog understands that your home is his "den." Anyplace other than his "den" is territory to be discovered &/or claimed. You need to keep an extra close watch over your dog when he is in an unfamiliar area. Or else he WILL soil. Either keep him confined to a small area in the foreign homestead (under supervision), keep him leashed, or keep him outside to spare your friends from his "doings."

Have you taught Hershey to eliminate using certain cues (ie: go potty, go poop, doody, pee pee, etc.)? If so, these types of problems can be lessened greatly.

Just monitor your dog for certain elimination cues when at another's home & employ potty-training techniques (interrupt the negative behavior and praise the appropriate behavior). It's like taking kids to others' homes...you need to watch them constantly!!!
