My Goldens don't like to get in the car either. First make sure that there isn't some physical problem with him. Then, I started by using a smaller car (closer to the ground), and putting something like food or a toy, or even a person that they like in the seat on the other side of the car. You may have to pick up his front paws and put them in the car. Have either you or someone else stand next to him and show him the food or toy. If you can get him up on the floor of the car then he will be easier to get on the seat. Once you get him in, make sure to make the ride as fun for him as possible, so that he will think that the car means going somewhere fun. I try to go to a dog park or to a lake or somewhere where I can play with them as often as possible, and when you do go to the vet or the groomer, take him somewhere fun afterwards to. You might have to lift him partially into the car a few more times before he figures out that Car=Fun, but once he does, he should get right in for you.
Are you sure he hates the car? It may be that he is afraid of travelling in it, a very common problem amongst dogs. Well it might take a long time before he becomes comfortable in the car. One thing that you can do is to make him familiar with the car, leave open all the doors of the car and bring your dog near it, let him sniff or whatever he likes to do around it, this procedure requires lots of patience but will work. You can also move his feeding in the car, this will encourage him to get in. Good luck.
