Mom needs 4lb dog to go with her What do we need to do in Nevada to take her into stores, restruants and more?
Mom is 82 and when Dad died she became severly depressed we got her this small dog and the 2 are inseperable now . Need to find out what we need (legal) to allow the dog to go into stores, restruants and hotels. It is too hot to leave her in car. We have her AKA Certicate for Caine Good Citizen but we need a vest or tag like therpy dogs you take into nursing homes. If this is what we need to get do we go through the same traing? Please help us with this matter Thanks the Family

To gain public access, the dog must be trained to preform specific tasks for the person. For more information, see www.iaadp.org Also check out the service and therapy dogs forums here.

To be an actual service dog, I think you would need something from your doctor stating she needs the dog and have the dog pass the tests to be a service dog.
You can't just get a vest; you would be impersonating a service dog and could get into trouble. It would be a good idea to post in the service dog forum, folks there can tell you exactly what you would need to do.

Only service dogs area allowed to go anywhere with their disabled handlers. To be a service dog 1) the handler has to have a life limiting disability, 2) the dog must be trained to do work or tasks to mitigate the disability, and 3) the dog must be public access trained to ignore everything, not eat dropped food, heel, etc. Therapy dogs are NOT service dogs. Taking a dog that is not a service dog into places that don't allow dogs (even if the dog is in a bag) is both offensive to those who need service dogs, and illegal. In California, for example, it will get you 6 months in jail and a $1000 fine. If you feel your mom may benefit from a fully trained service dog, she should check out the service and therapy forums, or visit www.psychdog.org. It takes 1-2 years to train a service dog, professional trainers can speed it up some. Unless your mom has a service dog, she should visit dog friendly stores, sit on patios that allow dogs at restaurants, and stay at dog friendly hotels

There are Psychiatric Service Dogs out there. However, to have a Service Dog, the handler has to be disabled ( ADA linky here: www.ada.gov ). A doctor can help determine if your mom meets the criteria. The dog has to be trained in tasks or work that help mitigate the handlers disability. The dog needs training in how to behave properly in public. A CGC is a good start, but the dog would need to be able to pass a public access test. A sample test is here. www.psychdog.org The PSDS has a lot of info on this. www.psychdog.org

It is ILLEGAL to sneak a pet into a store, cute granny or not! It hurts service dog handlers when people do that and makes others think they can do the same thing. Grandma should look into getting her little pooch trained as a PSD if she is disabled by the depression. If she is not, then she can not have a service dog, only an emotional support dog. As others have already said, emotional support animals are only allowed in pet-friendly places, no pets housing (with dr.'s note) and on airplanes(with note).

Has Grandma been to the doctor for her depression? I would think go that route first. Perhaps she can get on some medication or talk to someone about the loss of her husband.
