Nala

Just completed a round of Panacur for roundworms. How long before it takes effect and I should see them expelled?

Nala was previously given 2 rounds of Nemex for her roundworms, which had no effect. She throws the worms up occasionally in the middle of the night. She is now on her first round of Panacur, had her 3rd dose yesterday around noon. How long should it typically take for this to work? And I'm assuming if it's effective I will see worms expelled in the stool, correct?

I have no idea, all I know is to pick up and toss poop in the trash for a while so the worms don't reinfect her or another animal.

I'm sure your Vet won't mind answering this question over the phone.

Sometimes you will see them, sometimes not. It is usually either the 2nd or 3rd day if you are going to see them, but sometimes the system will digest them instead. Make sure you pick up all stools to keep her from getting reinfected!

I agree with Toto.

I'd only add that Panacur often causes diarrhea and sometimes vomiting. You may hear a loud gurgling or rumbling noise from the tummy area.

I'd supplement her food tonight some plain white boiled rice, cooked very well so it's super soft.

That won't interfere with her medication, but it will help soak up some of the extra stomach acid, soothe the colon and intestines with the rice starch it contains and also help bind the stool together if she does have loose stools.

You should be prepared to be able to tell the difference between white rice and worms, though, since she'll likely expel some undigested kernels of rice.

Good luck with her!
