Excessive barking comes from anxiety usually. Do you exercise your dogs? If not, you should do so. Two 20-minute walks a day, where he can sniff, see, and explore is the minimum. Simply having a female with him will not quell his need to "live," and get out in the world. Two dogs together without adequate exercise and outlets can actually give each other anxiety. Good luck.
