is there a humane way or repellent to discourage neighbor's dog visits? he hangs here for 4-5 days at a time!

i have had a very ugly experience w this neighbor regarding his dog, so cannot reason with owner. he cares not that his dog's gone for a week at a time, not being fed. i think the dog wont go home because possibly he's tied up there. neighbor has threatened my 4 dogs and i cannot take the chance. i totally ignore the dog, have tried squirting w water hose, he just hangs out further away. i have 7 acres but no hose that long! the dog is sweet, seems starved for affection but i do not want him here. it's a bad situation.

I would personally call Animal Control... the poor thing would be better off being adopted out instead of staying with this person. They probably wouldn't even notice the dog was gone to reclaim him.

The most humane way would be to call animal control, let them know that your neighbor is confrontational, but don't go into a bunch of detail, just say, "They have a dog who they allow to continually be off leash and wander into my yard. Worse, when he's not off leash, he might be tied up all day and often appears to go unfed. The dog is very sweet and I'm concerned about his welfare and also for my four dogs whom the neighbor has verbally threatened to harm."

Animal control will likely step in and issue a warning. Being off leash, tying up your dog for too long and not regularly feeding him is against the law in the vast majority of areas. This is one of the things animal control officers deal with most. They are used to managing situations like this while being careful not to worsen relations between neighbors.

It's quite possible once the neighbor knows he's being watched by code enforcement, he'll back off threatening your dogs, too.

Most people talk big but are cowards.

Where do you guys live? I would call AC. But please make sure the dog goes to a no-kill one. PM me please and tell me more info.

I have had the problem you have had.
I guess you have to call someone to make sure he gets his act together.
I would call the police first as there is laws on dogs at large.
It carries a fine so maybe that will be enough for him to get awake to the situation and let him know the dog must stay home.
It is true you should feel sorry for the dog not the owner. He just doesn't care about the dog, that is too bad :(

If the dog has not left your area, then by all means call animal control. Spraying it with a hose will only make matters worse for you, as the dog maybe agitated enough that he may turn on you. If you have a dog that is in heat, he may smell that coming on. Animal control can resolve this issue but if the dog seems sweet enough maybe you could take him in and call the police and let them know whats going on and let them handle it.
You said it would be a bad situation, so that would be out of the question unless you have quarters to keep him confined in until A.C. comes and resolves the issue.
