is it typical for a family dog to get along with family cats only?

Our dog has no problem with our cats at all. He lets them groom him, they drink out of each others water bowls, and sometimes I bust them eating each others food- but when it comes to a "stranger" cat it`s a way different story. Is this behavior typical? Maybe he is used to/realizes the cats that live in the same house as he does are part of his family and the occasional wandering neighborhood cat is not?..... just curious

Yep, you got it.
The dog may not welcome other dogs either. Or he may feel your cats are his "pack" and need his protection.

During her lifetime, Candy accepted our pet rats and even brought us baby bunnies to care for and accepted a baby squirrel we were rehabilitating.
Moles were dead meat if she could catch them, and she did! She killed about 3 dozen moles in her lifetime.
Dogs are pretty cool, huh?
