I've always let my guys have ice cubes. One or two won't hurt. You could always put them in his water dish to cool it down. Cold compresses in the armpit area, belly, & groin will also help cool them off.

We fill our dog's bowl with ice. They love to eat ice cubes, it will not hurt them at all. This is a great way to cool off your dog.

That I have done it extensively doesn't prove it is safe. I saw a recent report that it caused bloat. Bloat is much more of a problem with dogs larger than Shelties.
I had each of my Labs out all evening last weekend selling pop and water and lavished ice cubes on them to keep them cool. I also wet them down. I am waiting a chance to ask somebody I trust about it. I am concerned enough that I will check it out further, but will continue to give my dogs ice cubes for now.
One thing is give them ice cubes to keep them cool. The problems could come from cooling them off once they are too hot with them.

It is true. If your dog is already overheated and you are trying to cool it off by giving ice cubes, it can cause stomach spasms, which can lead to bloat. The study on it was passed around a mastiff forum i'm on because folks who show their dogs often use ice at the shows to keep the dogs cool.

Yes it can, I have heard it on other breed pages also. I would keep putting out fresh water all the time or maybe get a large piece of ice that they can lick but not swollow

I would be concerned that ice might damage a dogs teeth. For humans cold drinks on a hot day are not considered healthy (although they are very enjoyable) and chewing ice can damage enamel. This could be true for dogs also. The body has to adjust to abrupt changes in temperature which is a stress to it.
