Hush

Is it normal for teething puppies to have especially bad breath?

Hushpuppy used to have normal, stinky puppy breath but in the last week or so, it has gone up a few levels of stink to REALLY AWFUL and almost has a metallic stink to it. She is currently on a diet of Orijen puppy kibble and Wellness wet food and has lots of chew toys that should help clean her teeth and soothe her gums. Could the fact that she is teething contribute to the stink breath? Or does anyone have any other ideas or things that might help?

First I would check inside her mouth to make she don't have any sores in her mouth or that her gums don't look red and swallon just to make sure there is no infection going on. If so she would needs some meds from the vet. If they look normal I would try giveing her some rawhides they would help clen her teeth.

A long shot but check her teeth. Introduce your puppy to having it's teeth brushed, at least a couple times a week. Save a bundle in dental care.
I would not be combining two different brands of food. This could throw off the levels in the minerals and vitamins etc.
Teething could be a culprit I would suspect.

I would NOT give a dog Activia yogurt IE: Sugar content, even if it is synthetic. Always a plain yogurt with active bacteria. Administer very small amount in food, in morning. 1/2 tsp for a puppy would be plenty.
Blood is common during teething and will resemble an odor of metallic. Try Charcoal dog biscuits, to freshen breath.

Definitely checking for sores in the mouth is good. You can always try PETfection Breath Freshener Spray. It is 100% Organic and Non Toxic. It helps with bacteria and plaque which cause the bad breath. It is fine to use on puppies as long as you only use it once or twice a day. You can check it out at www.myPETfection.com for more info. Another thought is to get rid of the wet food. Wet food can cause terrible breath. Hope this helps, good luck!
