Oh yes, German Shedders (har har) shed a lot--especially around this time of year. It's called "blowing their coat" and it happens twice a year.
Mine shed profusely year-round, but then that's probably because of the area I live in where it the weather can be summer-like year-long.

Oh Yes - It's the German Shephard under coat that needs to come off: Try getting a brush with deep teeth - In the pet store they are caleld " under coat brushes or under coat rakes) ( Also, a good shampoo and doggie vitamin can be helpful)
See here for shampoo and Tips on shedding : www.bulldogvitamin.com ( Hope this helps - a few good baths and brushing with a proper brush will make things much better for you.

Riley is a great looking dog. Yes..prepare for hair every day...everywhere..even in the butter. lol German Shepherds (note the spelling) shed...a lot, even when they are not blowing coat. This time of year is when most double coated dogs blow coat. I work on my two every day..outside..for about 20 minutes. Furminator, undercoat rake, pin brush, & finishing comb.
GSDs do not do well with excessive bathing, but beagles have that houndy funk..so use discretion when bathing. Too much bathing will actually backfire, with skin issues that can manifest in more hair loss.
My white gsd has had 3 baths in 3 years. My other guy gets a few more..he likes skunks, & rolling in dead stuf...sigh.
