i'm thinking of getting a doberman, but two days a week would need to leave him with run of the garden and summer house.

You should have a dog walker come and walk or play with the dogs. Doberman have a lot of energy, and need that socialization at a young age. Spend as much time when you can with him and when you cant have someone come so he still gets that socialization he needs.
