I'm adopting 2 dogs from a friend who just recently passed away. How can I make the transition easy for all of us?

Both dogs are 4 years old. They were allowed to get up on the furniture and basically had the run of the house. These are things that I didn't allow dogs I had in the past do. I know they will miss their "mom" VERY much and will be very confused. A friend of mine suggested bringing an article of clothing she wore for them to sleep with. Any suggestions on how to make this huge change for them as smooth as possible would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks.
