Australian Shepherds are working dogs. So, unless your willing to give it "a lot time", then I would consider a different breed. Esp. since you have 2 small children, which already take up a lot of your time. Good Luck!

I agree with the other post. Most herding dogs need a lot of space and a lot of attention. Even with access to walks, it may be difficult for an active breed to be in an apartment all day. Your best bet may be going to some shelters with your family and looking at the animals there. It's more important to get a dog that fits with your family rather than a particular breed. And Rescue animals can be so great (I've adopted several)! Give the mixed breeds a chance, and definitely don't rule out adult dogs either. Puppies need house training, socializing, obedience training, and a lot of free time!

How about starting out with a dog that has a lower activity level? Australian Shepherds are extremely active dogs, they are working dogs. I can't recommend a dog breed for you because you haven't provided enough information. Ask the question again but post more about your lifestyle (how much exercise you can give this dog a day, how much grooming you can handle, what size of dog you're wanting, etc).
