I have a six year old male Cairn Terrier and he is a great dog, except, he marks throughout the house.
It is making us crazy. I have tried crating him when we are not around. I am careful to completely clean up after him. It is interesting that he doesn't mark on the carpet, just the hardwood floors or the tile. I wish I could figure out how to fix this issue. He would be absolutely perfect if we could resolve this. Please give me any helpful suggestions. I will try anything.

By marking, do you mean he pees in several places on the hard floor while you are out? How long has he been doing this? Any changes in the house? How long is he left alone? Does crating keep him dry?
Is he peeing when you're home? Possible UTI?
See the Vet first to rule out a medical problem. Then potty train. Doesn't matter that he's a 6 year old.
