I have a dog that eats for a few days and then just stops for no apparent reason. Any ideas what might be wrong?

I've just started fostering and my first dog is a beautiful Iris. She's part beagle and part fox hound. I've had her now for 1 1/2 weeks. She's getting lots of love and wags her tail a really lot! She's wonderful in every way, but I have one concern. When I first got her she came with a bag of food that supposedly was what she was eating (Old Roys). She would eat for the first couple of days. Then she stopped eating all together. I had purchased a small bag of IAMS dog food in case I was given a dog in an emergency situation so I would have something to feed him/her. I tried the IAMs with Iris after 1 1/2 days of not eating. She gobbled it up and continued to do so for a couple more days. Then she went another full day without eating. I made some gravy and poured a bit over her food. So far she's still eating. I just don't understand why she stops. She's about 4 years old and is spayed. I suppose she could be missing her other mom, but she seems to be happy here too. She also doesn’t beg for food even when I’m eating, so I’m sure she’s not used to eating people food. Lots of love and hardly ever alone. I'm thinking perhaps her teeth are sore and it hurts to chew? Any ideas?

1st things first: You MUST rule out ANY physcal problems. A vet visit should do that pretty quickly!

I've heard tell from several ppl that some dogs just dont eat everyday. As long as they don't loose weight it's not a problem.

If the dog doen't eat or doesn't like the food, you can put water or gravy on it (like you have done) and heat it up a little. You could also mix a bit of canned food to make it more appealing.

Im not sure what amount of excersize the dog gets, but the more the dog does, the more hungry it will get!

Hi there!

Congrats on fostering - you are good to help Iris! I agree with Patchs about talking to the vet to rule out any physical problems.

Next, check the labels of the food you're giving her. Ol' Roy and Iams are known for having corn, which is very hard for dogs to digest. So I wouldn't stay with either brand. Here is a helpful website on feeding your dog: www.4pawsu.com

If Iris is getting too many calories from her food, she may be self-regulating her intake (many dogs do this). Or she may be bored easily... hard to say!

My Katie eats Solid Gold, Wellness, Taste of the Wild, and Lotus. I slowly mix the last 1/4 of one large bag into the next, to transition her to a new flavor and to ensure variety in her diet. You can also visit the Dogster forums on commercial dog food and feeding raw. Depending on your time, disposable income, and personal interest/commitment, you can choose the best way to feed Iris so she remains healthy and happy.

Good luck!

Evaluate the dog as illustrated in this link, www.longliveyourdog.com Have the vet to confirm your judgment. Adjust the dogs food and exercise to reach its ideal body condition.

The worst thing you can do is to bribe a dog with rich foods into eating more than it needs. Instead, put down the dish with what the dog should eat, and give it 15 minutes to eat. Then take it up. Do not give it anything to eat until its next scheduled meal. In a few days, it should be eating what it needs. Continue to check its ribs and adjust the food as needed. It is rare for a healthy dog not to eat what it needs. Unfortunately, in too many cases, it is less than the package says, and less than the owner thinks the dog should have.

I don't know about Old Roy, but Iams has a substantial successful history in large, professionally managed programs. That corn is a problem is a myth perpetuated by those selling more expensive foods and those that accept the marketing hype.

Miss Priss

thanks for taking care and Fostering this doggie kid!!! YOU are an angel...

She may need to be de-wormed or she could have a virus or parasite in the belly -
so - take a stool sample to the vet ...
I am sure the Foster people will pay the vet bill?
As for the O'd Roy dog food - YUCK - as you already know - poor food:

This is one smart dog, not to eat the IAMS or OL Roys (Sprawl-Mart) brand. Do your loving animal a favor and stop poisoning it! Look up dogfoodanalysis.com then click on reviews. Type in IAMS and look at the detailed ingredients list. We feed our dog raw, but I'm not going to push this on you. There are ups and downs to it. However, there are good, healthy foods on the market. If you find a 4 or 5 star dog food in one of your local markets and think it's over-priced, look at it like this. The dog won't need nearly as much as the cheap food to keep it going, and your vet bills will be much less in the long run. A good dog food will allow your dog to live a much much longer and healthier life. Many dog foods contain additives and chemicals that lead to kidney failure, cancer, etc.

It is great you are fostering. Well done! I've been told by several vets that a good over the counter food is Pedigree. Most of my dogs have eaten only dry food with plenty of water on the side. With the (3) I have now I add a couple of tablespoons of canned. My Husky does the same thing quiet often. ( not eat) You did not say where you live. I am in the south, it gets hot! Like many people when it's hot I don't always want to eat either. The vets say a dog will not starve itself. By changing the food all the time you could be upseting her system. Like alot of folks I thought a change is good. It is not... Put the food down 15min is average, if she doesn't eat pick it up and try at the next feeding time. You did not say how old the dog is. Adults need only eat once a day. Good luck,
