It could be a few different things. Sometimes, muscles can make a popping noise that sounds like bone or joints cracking. Or his jaw could be slightly mis-aligned, but this isn't that common.

I would definitely take him to the vet to have this checked out. It's not really normal and if there's something that can be treated, it's always better to get it treated sooner rather than later. It will save him pain and discomfort and also make his treatment chances more successful and quicker, which will end up saving you money in the long run.
