Changing food should be done gradually, over the coarse of a week. Changing all at once will give diarrhea. As for the skin problems, he may have an allergy. Try changing to a food that has less or no grain with less filler. Also, try a different protein. Example, beef to lamb to chicken to turkey etc. Sometimes you have to change a few times to find a food that works. Don't buy anything that's advertised on TV. You would need to go to a specialty dog food store. Did the vet test for mange? That could also be a possibility. You can get more info on the Nutrition forum on this site. Good Luck!

Our Lab had really bad allergies (dustmites) and was scratching and itching. I didn't want to use drugs so opted to give her the healthiest diet possible. For the past 3-4 months, she's been getting cooked meat, low-carb cooked vegetables, some raw chopped carrot or spinach, also cooked dried beans (not canned!) mushed or chopped in a food processor. Also a fish oil supplement, biotin (5 mg per 20 lb body weight), dog multi- vitamin/mineral supplement and just a handful of premium kibble (I've been using Merrick). Just started on a coconut oil supplement, but her scratching is down about 80% of what it was. Her fur is soft, shiny and no doggy odor. She does occasionally get loose bowels so I've yet to pinpoint what might cause it, but it's not a big problem.

We understand what your going through. I have some skin allergies as well. Whenever you switch foods be sure to do so slowly, over at least a weeks period. You should feed 75% of the old food and 25% of the new food for at least two days, than half and half for another two days, and 75% new with 25% old for two more days. Switching foods drastically can cause upset tummies.
Mom recommends switching to a limited ingredient food like Nutro Natural Choices Herring Meal & potato formula. Nutro uses natural ingredients with added vitamins and minerals. They believe that natural foods are healthier, fresher, safer, and tastier! The Herring Meal & Potato formula is specially formulated for dogs with sensitive skin and stomachs so it would be a perfect option for your springer!
You can check out their website and frequent rewards program at:
www.TheNutroCompany.com

Remember to switch over slowly and it will take 8-12 weeks to see full results. Remember to monitor treats as well-

Not enough information. Skin problems? What food changes?
