Baby humans don't understand language, aren't potty trained, bite, write on walls, basically uncivilized. BUT they are capable of learning the language, dogs do not learn our language - NO - they only learn to connect a specific sound to a behavior or item.

My Sister's husband also seems to think dogs are born knowing how to behave and live with humans. NOT! They are BABY ANIMALS. They do not understand a word you say. They don't know why you are hitting them because dogs relate a reward or punishment to something that happened 2 seconds ago. Heelers are VERY active dogs, they are supposed to herd livestock all day. They are BORN this way. If they have no job they become bored and destructive. They would be much happier on a farm where they will get training and live a busy life. Keeping them would be bad for them.

If you must have a dog, get a lap dog and never let it outside alone, use a leash to walk it.

Heelers are herders. It is their nature to nip at heels & jump to *herd* their flock. Please ask your parents to buy you a dog training book such as The Power of Positive Training by Pat Miller. As the other poster said they are looking for a job. You must give them at least an hour of good exercise every day for their bodies & please keep training them for the sake of their mental health (and your family)! This type of dog is smart enough to know how to drive you crazy if/when they are bored. Training a dog takes a LONG TIME! I work with my two dogs every day...even though one is 5 years old. Keep trying, be patient, don't get frustrated & hopefully you will have good dogs! When they jump up turn away and do not pay attention to them until they sit, or calm down. If you know they are going to jump, time it so you take a step back and they will miss you! Good luck.

It is the OWNER'S responsibility to keep dogs contained on their own property. Please do not allow them to roam.

Spanking them doesn't teach them anything... if that's "training" then I guess that would be why it didn't work.

Pick up "The Power of Positive Training" by Pat Miller, it's a good step-by-step training book for basic obedience.

They jump up and nip your parents because they are trying to herd SOMETHING, ANYTHING, even your parents. Heelers are not typical house dogs, they are working dogs and they need someting to do. If you don't give them something to do, they will keep themselves busy. No,spanking doesn't work.Dogs don't really care about "spanking", sometimes they can even think it is play. Some people BEAT their dogs into submission, but that's pretty dumb if you want to TRAIN the dog after,he'll be so fearful he'll just run away from you.(see Sammy's story).Training consists mainly of keeping a keen eye on your dog and PREVENTING the bad behavior from occurring. When you can't be certain that your dogs will be in a secure environment, crate them, end of neighbor problems. Start with that, and you'll be training yourself to.You can watch what happens just BEFORE a bad behavior and be able to intercede the next time.Teach yourself to really SEE.&remember you can't overdo kind words and praise with dogs.
