I have had Yorkies and I own a Westie now. My friend has 3 Yorkies. They are much smaller and do not shed. Harder to house train for the most part. They have a high pitched bark.

Westie's will get to be around 18 pounds for a female, at least mine is. They can take jumping down from tall beds better I think. They are not quite as fast as a Yorkie because they are twice the size. They do shed a very little bit. IMOP they are easier to groom because they are larger. They have a lower sounding bark.

I think Yorkies are classified as Toy dogs and Westies as Small dogs.

I just lost my Minature Schnauzer to the Rainbow Bridge after 12 years. He was smaller than the Westie.

I now have an Australian Terrier too. They don't shed.

They are all adorable . You are looking for a toy breed by the sound of your selections, so most toys are the same in temperment despite a few. The maltese are sweet lap dogs. My good friend breeds Yorkies, they are a very sweet breed, not as delicate as the maltese in ways of personality. I have never been in contact with a westie, but as far as the best breed for you that all depends on your family and what you are looking for. Also like people dogs have their own personalities too so a good breeder will match a pup's personality with the family's lifestyle.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

I'd go with a Westie, the are tough and peppy. They are smart and courageous little guys. And last but not least, cute. They'll be easier to groom than a Maltese, and when you say "family" I imagine kids, Yorkies are great little dogs, but not real good for kids and rough play. They are delicate, but they don't seem to know it. Maltese I am not very familiar with but I don't think they have the high energy of a terrier, which makes the terrier a good choice for a family with kids.

I just got 2 new Westie puppies. A brother and sister. I'm really glad I got the two. They run and play all day long and keep each other company. If you have a yard I hope you don't like the grass or flowers. The puppies dug out all plants and even pull out the grass. My husband doesn't mind, now he doesn't have to mow the grass. They are fun and smart dogs they were easy to train. I am having some problems house training two at a time. Good Luck
