I am 1, and my mommy is really nervous I won't be the little angel I normally am...hehe She's heard mixed reviews on sedatives (anti anxiety meds) and is now nervous to use them.... she knows she can't take me out of my carrier during flight. What about water? Any thoughts on keeping me calm? And we have a layover w/ possibility of no outside time for me... should she keep me in carrier? I may be perfectly fine, but she knows I hate my kennel :-P and is trying to be more prepared as not to have a miserable flight! Any suggestions/advise is greatly appreciated! Thank you!!!

They don't actually have to stay crated while in the airport. In fact you have to walk them through TSA and send the carrier on the Xray. Two weeks ago I flew from Salt Lake to Dallas (3 hours) with Delta . My dog is 6 months old, but took the trip like a champ. In preparation I had my dog stay inside his carrier (I have a softsided) for a couple car rides. He got used to the idea and fell asleep minutes after I put him in the car.

We got to the airport an hour early and walked around for about 30 minutes before getting on. Once in the airplane I gave him a bone. The take off and landing made him anxious, but I just stuck my hand inside his kennel and petted him along with slipping him a couple (very small) treats. Once we got off the plane I let him out and he even waited until we got outside to go potty.

If you have time in your layover to walk outside and check back in that seems best. My vet said sedatives are not necessary and can be harmful, so I stayed away from them.

She is going to have to stay in the carrier while in the airport. The only animals don't have to be crated/contained are service animals.

Make sure you take a collar/leash that doesn't have a lot of metal as you (and the dog) must clear the metal detector. The carrier will have to go through the x-ray machine.

You might try Rescue Remedy in a trial run before the flight to see how well it works.

Feed light the evening before and make sure you give her plenty of time to do all of her business before you head to the security checkpoint.

By your question I can assume the airlines is allowing her to travel with you and not in the cargo hold, which is awesome. I would try and get her to except and enjoy her carrier as much as possible. I would also start taking her places in her carrier where it's really busy to get her used to all the noise and happenings going on around her. If you can go someplace near the airport to get her used to the noise of the planes. I wouldn't recommend water before the flight, the need to pee may arise during airtravel. I'm quite positive your dog needs to be in and stay in the carrier at all times even in the airport, so talk to them about that.
Talk to your airlines about layovers, and where you could possibly take her out for some freedom. Have a leash in your carry on to be able to walk her outside the airport.
Sedatives may help but only you can decide whether to use them or not. A barking, whining dog may not be welcomed by other passengers.
Have a safe flight and all my best.

Check with the airline. Sedatives may be banned.

I recently enjoyed a 4 1/2 hour delay in Chicago. I was very glad I didn't have the dog along. It would be a big hassle getting to any grass from most larger terminals.
