First put the leash on the dog and let him drag it around for a few days. Encourage him to follow you using treats and toys. Then gently pull the leash while putting a treat in front of him, only treat him when he moves. You can let him lick/bite at the treat and only give it to him after he has walked a long amount.
How old is your pup? The suggestion to let him get used to its presence is perfect. Imagine if someone made you all of a sudden walk around with something heavy on your neck, and then dragged you about :).
The leash is a huge adjustment for puppies, especially if they've never been properly introduced. Is it a retractable or a more traditional leash? When he gets used to it, make the walking fun.
When I got my pup, we worked from the get-go on sitting down when I stopped, and walking on my left side without pulling. That meant lots of praise, treats and communication. He loves his walks now and it helped ease the transition to the leash (once he was used to its restraint and weight).
