How well does the Don Sullivan training method work? (only people who have actually used the videos repond please:)

I recently submitted a question asking which was better: the petsmart traing or the don sullivan training videos. I was set to buy the Don Sullivan training videos when every response i recieved was either for the petsmart training or against Don. I did notice however that everyone who replied negatively to the Don Sullivan videos did not mention anything about actually using the videos. I would like to hear some responses from people who have used the videos themselves to and get an unbiased perspective on them if at all possible.

I've SEEN the videos, does that count?

I haven't USED them. Because they are archaic and totally counterproductive.

Yes, they are like what any kind of training video has, tips and demonstrations with hands-on, walk you through the particular training techniques.

I was one of those who replied negatively to his methods/videos.

I guess I'd still consider myself biased because I don't subscribe to the ideology that you have to break, humiliate, scare or dominate a dog in order to train them. It just doesn't work and it's quite outdated.

I agree with Jack, once again. My neighbors, quite elderly, purchased his videos and his "special" prong collar to train their shepherd. These people were apalled at the methods he suggests and they have trained dogs their whole lives. His collar is a plastic version of the familiar prong collar and works with exactly the same pressure on your dog's neck. Dominance (you over your dog) and punishment will make your dog respond to your commands, but there are much more humane methods that will train you and your dog to be a working team, enjoying the dog/owner bond that develops thru humane, positive training.

I'm going to be honest, I haven't USED them, but I HAVE successfully trained many animals, and these methods DO NOT WORK.
Probably the only good advice you get will be from people who haven't tried it, because if they knew anything about dog training they wouldn't have wasted their money on it in the first place. While there is better training for your pet available, if it were in between Petsmart training and Don Sullivan, Petsmart wins by a mile. Positive Reinforcement is always the way to go, remember that. You can pick up some books too, like The Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson. The Power of Positive Dog Training by Pat Miller is also great.

I'll be the bad guy, who actually stands up against treat training. It doesn't proof, and all you clicker trainers know it.

Do you give your children a cheeseburger everytime they listen to you, or do you give them verbal praise? When your child is sent to the corner but refuses, do you just yell at them, or acutally put them there?

Our Zeus, went to and passed basic and advanaced training at the local pet store, that was reccommended to us by our vet. He was your typical treat trained dog. He was happy to comply with commands on his terms, and quickly dismissed them when a better option presented itself.

We finally decided to try Don's system because we purchased an "invisible fence" when Zeus was a pup, and its the only training that had truly stuck. He hasn't left boundry, not once, with lots and lots of temptation. Don's system is similar in concept. It involves correction for bad decisions and lots of praise (not food) for good behavior. It worked, AWESOME!
