The rule has always been one year old to switch over to adult food. My dogs are large breed dogs and I switched them over to adult food at 6 month of the advice of a vet that studies my breed of dogs and informed me this was the time to do it. This is still something to look into , but I would go with a year old.

I know little about this, but I think you should know about the controversy on this topic. There are differing opinions on this, even among vets.

he could switch right now! Many brands of dog food are actually All Life Stages, meaning that they're formulated to meet the needs of both growing pups and maintaining adults. "Puppy Food" is as much a marketing ploy as being based on real science.
BUT: I have also read that puppies should NEVER be fed a kibble less than 22 percent protein, and some "ALS" foods are that low. Ideally it should be 26% or more. So check the amount (it's clearly labeled on the bag, on the back or side) before buying.

There are many different opinions on this topic. The standard rule of when to switch from puppy to adult is one year. When you get into large breeds, you should be feeding a large breed puppy formula to begin with and if it is a controlled growth formula than you should be able to wait to change to adult food until a year instead of the average 6 to 8 month rule.
