I have large breed dogs (gsd's), so check the recommendations on the food you are feeding. Go for the highest quality you can afford for optimal health & development. A puppy should be fed at least 4 times a day at that age. Measure out his daily ration & split into 4 portions. Give him about 15-20 minutes to eat, then pick up the bowl, at next feed time add the next ration & repeat. If you see he is not eating it all by the end of the day & he is not showing ill effects you can feed a bit less. Obesity is just as bad for dogs as people, but pups do need that nutrition to grow into healthy dogs. Congrats on your new puppy.

I would say less than a cup divided into 3 meals a day. I would be giving a lab 1 1/2 cups. You should be feeding a puppy chow now. Switching to an adult chow for the larger breeds at 4 months, slows growth and helps develop sturdier joints.

Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs. Here is a link to a good illustrated guide,

As for what you feed, likely the very best thing is to continue what it has been eating if you know. Sudden changes in diet can cause upsets. Even a slow, careful change can cause a dog that was doing well problems. Despite all the strong opinions, there is no evidence any one food is better than any other.

How much all depends on the food you are feeding your puppy. If it is a high quality premium food like Ultra puppy you are going to feed a lot less than if it were a lower quality food. Ultra doesn't have ground yellow corn, chicken by-product meal, artificial colors or preservatives so in return your dog eats less of it because it is more concentrated with high quality ingredients. Ultra has super high antioxidant foods in the product to help keep your puppies immune system up to par! :D

So, look on the bag of food for the guideline that that particular company recommends. Start with the low end because they are normally a little on the high side. Most vets will recommend to start feeding at least twice a day with puppies.

Congrats on your new puppy!

I have always feed puppies three times a day for the first few months. I would go by what the bag says to feed and just add or subtract food depending on if the dog is getting fat or not gaining weight
