How long does it take for a puppy to catch parvo, and is it contagious to older dogs?

I just got a 2 month old puppy less than 5 days ago from a local petstore, and now he is hospitlized from parvo. I bought him from the store on a friday night, and i noticed he was acting differently and vomitting tuesday night. Wednesday he started having dirrea, vommiting, and I couldnt get him to eat. He is now hospitalized from parvo, and we're waiting to see how he does. question 1. Did he have parvo when we bought him, or did he catch it within the 5 days on us purchasing him? question 2. I have a 6 year old poodle in the house that hasnt had a parvo shot since 2005, but shes getting a booster tomorrow, how safe is she? thanks

The incubation period of the virus is 5-10 days, so you're in the grey area- he could have been exposed before or after you bought him- parvovirus is common in the environment, everywhere other dogs have pooped, since it's spread in feces and lasts a long time.

Parvo causes no symptoms in 80% of adult dogs that contract it. The vaccine is also very effective for many years in adult dogs, so if your poodle was vax'ed after 16 weeks old she's almost certainly immune.

Getting a booster now won't really make a difference- it's almost a sure thing she's already been exposed.

I would be reading the fine print of your sale papers from the pet store- see if your vet bills are covered by the warranty. Many areas also have "puppy lemon laws" where the seller is liable for sick or defective puppies.
