Dewclaws and tails are removed by a vet when the puppies are only a couple of days old. It's done this way because supposedly there are not as many mature nerve endings at the tips of the puppies' tails so they are not supposed to feel as much pain.

Later on in life it becomes a tail 'amputation' and is definitely painful and a pretty big surgery for the dog. Dewclaw removal later on is also a very painful procedure.

Have a vet handle it.

Yup she's right have a vet handle it but I stongly suggest you don't dock your pups tails, becasue its like them having plastic surgery without their consent. That's the way they were born, and are supposed to look, so keep it that way :)

Docking tails and removing dew claws is done by your veterinarian when your puppies are only a few days old.

If you don't know this, you should not be breeding!
