How do I teach my Jack Russell Terrier to play fetch

My dogs a Jack Russell Terrier and whenever I try to teach him fetch, I would throw it and he would get it but when he comes back he wouldn't let go of it and growls and bites if i try to take it away from him. What do I do? He's 3 years old and I want to teach him fetch.

Have another ball or toy handy and offer to trade it. Praise and reward him for giving the toy over.

Also, the growling and biting you describe may very well be play biting--dogs usually this during playtime. (Though play-biting is to be discouraged. That said, I am guilty of playfighting with my dog which brings on some amount of play biting.)

If it's resource guarding, or even if you just think it may be resource guarding, it should be stopped.
