How do I get my 2 schnoodles to accept a pet bird?

We have 2 - 4 year old schnoodles (Poodle/Schnauzer X) and are thinking about getting a small bird. Will this be an issue? What do we do to train them to leave it alone?

Training against instinct is unadvisable, unless the cage is outside where the dogs can't get to it at all. Poodles were bird dogs back in the day. Schnauzers are very barky and if you do not own land, you might expect barking complaints from your neighbors. My friend with a cat wanted to get a bird and named it Karma, and tried to teach the cat not to hurt it. Luckily, Karma did have good karma and was chased near the ceiling after the cat capsized her cage and managed to break it open. Karma was appropriately rehomed soon after. ^_^

Make sure the cage would be beyond their reach and sight otherwise, they would become restless.

Get a tall bird cage and put the bird and its cage away from the dogs. Have you tried separating them with a baby gate from the bird by putting the dogs in one room and the bird in the other?
