How do i break a leash aggressive golden retriever??
I have a year and a half old golden retriever who has a great attitude. He is both on and off leash trained. When out walking him on his leash he gets aggressive with other dogs, like barking, growling and even will attack them. How do i break this?? when he is off his leash he is fine he runs up to them and plays and all that jazz. I am thinking he feels restricted. Also he doesn't like small dogs. PLEASE HELP!!

I am working on that constantly with my guy. What has helped me are a few things. If I see the dog first, I ask for focus/look at me. When he does I mark it & treat. I keep marking/treating until the dog has passed, or my guy quits looking at me to focus on the other dog. Then we will do quick direction changes at "heel". Again, treat/mark for compliance. Find his threshold..where he reacts..& try to work under that level. Of course, when you round a corner & there's a dog you need to act fast. Quick direction change..even if you spin around & go the other way. You can also do "look at that" where you mark/treat the dog for looking at the other dog, then looking at you. This did not work for me, though. The combo of positive reinforcement, coupled with direction changes has made a huge difference. We can now follow other dogs at about 25 ft, plus he did not react when a JRT suddenly appeared about 5 ft away (behind a fence). Running out of characters. pmail me if u need more info.
