Lucy

How can I de-mat my dog's fur?

Lucy is a purebred Havanese. Currently her coat is clipped to 3/4 of an inch. We have never brought her to a groomer, but we are usually pretty good about brushing her. Unfortunately, we recently left her with a petsitter for 3 weeks and neglected to give the sitter clear grooming instructions. Now her undercoat is very tangled. Is there anything we can do to get our fluffy puppy back, short of clipping all her hair?

They do sell a detangling comb that cuts through the mats. It may help to get them out. Otherwise, worse case you may have to take the coat down short if it is to bad. I hope this works for you and you do not have to shave them down.

If her coat is only 3/4 of an inch long it should be pretty easy to comb out using a metal comb. Use some spray on conditioner and line comb starting at the bottom and working your way up until it is all combed.
Follow with a good shampoo and line comb again while she is being dried with a hand held dryer.

I know a sheep dog owner who uses PETfection Deodorizer/Allergy Spray as a detangler. It is 100% Organic and Non Toxic. He sprays it all over the fur and then uses a comb to brush through. He says it works really well. Check it out at www.myPETfection.com if you are interested. Hope this helps!
